Dr. S.S.
Bisen from TFRI made a presentation titled "Quality Control and
Standardization of Raw Non-wood Forest Produce". He narrated brief reviews
of different phamacoeias including BHP JSHM, APRI, WHO Guidelines. He mentioned
that in some of the monographs, not a single test is given. He said that while
for majority of others only four general types of tess are applied as listed
below:

Dr.
Bisen elaborated upon the Japanese Standards for Herbal Medicines (JSMH). He
also mentioned about the Ayurvedic Phamacopoeia of India (API) which provides pharmopoeial standards of Single drugs of plant origin according to the
parameters approved by the ayurvedic Committee (APC).
Dr.
Bisen also mentioned the WHO Guidelines on quality control methods for medicinal
plant materials. According to that, WHO has offered a small document with an
objective to provide recommended general test methods and general limits for
contaminants in medicinal plant materials. WHO has also suggested that for non-pharmacopoeial
materials, where official norms are not available, national or internal (House)
specifications may be developed on the basis of local experience.
Dr.
Bisen presented his observations on some of the realities, facts and future:
From the review of worldwide available pharmacopoeia, it is clear that,
no pharmacopoeia is able to give concrete methodology for routine quality
control of medicinal herbs.
It indicates the limitations of basic approach of developing standards in
line with allopathic synthetic medicines.
Dr.
Bisen suggested some approaches to quality control:
Following all tests given in herbal/herbal traditional medicine books.
Stress on selection of herbs, and follow of a validated process of
manufacture is done in presence of a qualified person.
Using modern analytical tools to monitor the process of manufacture.
In order to build quality into a herbal remedy the manufacturer must have
access to using modern formulating agents and facilities where herbal remedies
could be tested need to be established and their number enhanced. Presently
position is rather poor and grim.
Furthermore,
Dr. Bisen presented the steps for development of quality control methods. He
said that –
Concrete method of identification and quality assessment should be
developed on modern lines.
By transferring all the information given in traditional books for the
identification and quality assessment of selected herbs.
This information may include its name in different languages.
Its anatomical characteristics
Macroscopical character.
Organoleptic characteristic or particular traditional identification test
Geographical source
Season of collection, and,
Parts to be used etc.
