Mr. Rajaram
Tripathi, successful cultivator of Safed Musli and other Minor Forest Produce
stated during his presentation that certification is a costly affair and hence
it shall be attempted according to the market vied for. It is the process that
is certified and not the product. There should be a Government of India run
certification agency working along the lines as prescribed by international
protocol. The need for certification increases manifold with regard to NWFP as
they are taken by ailing persons as medicines. He also stated that since
medicinal plants are to be directly consumed, it is important that these are
organically grown. He also mentioned that there has been no initiative so far to
standardize NWFP and Chhattisgarh would be the first state to take this
initiative. |
He said that there are about 116 Ayurvedic products that use safed musli. He also said that there is a better market for the alkaloids. He further added that now these herbal products are also being used as food supplements and are also being available as health and sport diets. For such products, the consumers are even ready to pay 40-50% premium on these quality products.
