PURPOSE OF FIELD VISIT

The purpose of taking the participants to this particular area was to show them:

Paradigm shift from timber oriented conversion system based forest management to people oriented selection system based forest management.
Apparent transition in forest management philosophy and practice from 1878 A.D to 2003 A.D, spanning over 100 years of management in Compartment no. 383 of Dugli-Jabarra PPA.
Management implications of Working Plan which form the basis for management of the forest area.
Enthusiastic involvement of the local people in the People's Protected Area.
Key Result Areas (KRAs) where PPA initiative has been undertaken.
Efficacy of entrusting the Divisional Forest Officer with additional authority as the Chief Executive Officer and the resultant integration of inter-departmental developmental efforts.
Development of infrastructure at the village level, where earlier there was a lack of interdepartmental coordination .
Attitudinal change among the villagers and enhancement in the awareness levels of the local people.
Functioning of the center for training cum capacity building having dona-pattal making units.
Promotion of organic manure prepared onsite, by leaf biomass gathered in the forest area. There are several pits filled with leaf biomass in the forest area. The local people, along with the forest guards collect leaves from the forest area and fill these pits to allow leaves to decompose into a nutrient rich organic manure. Only a small quantity of fallen leaves are collected and the rest is left on the forest floor to avoid disturbing the natural process of manuring the forest soil.
Vermi-compost unit which has been established to develop vermi-compost to be used in the farmlands for organic farming.
Improved regeneration in the forests in PPA insitu areas. This was shown by the new regeneration coming on the forest floor and also the new plants of the locally available species appearing as a result of protection from grazing and fire.
Show quality material available in the field so that interested parties could develop business with the societies.
